The updated exterior appearance is the first update Camaro buyers will notice for 1998. For 1998, that performance bloodline continues, as Camaro arrives with a number of dramatic changes, including a new exterior appearance, a modified Corvette LS1 5.7 Liter V8 engine in Z28 models, as well as chassis and braking improvements, an available Sport Appearance Package (formerly the RS) on all models and a factory-direct Z28 with the SS Performance/ Appearance Package. While others have come and gone, Chevy Camaro has always stood for style, agility and performance. It's one of the only American sport coupes that's stayed true to its lineage for more than 30 years. The Z28 Convertible listed for $28,000 while the SS Convertible tipped the scales at $31,500.
The Z28 Coupe had a base price of $21,000 while the SS Coupe sold for $25,000. The SS Camaros received an under-hood forced-air induction system, a high-performance ride and handling suspension package, 17-inch cast-aluminum alloy wheels wrapped with P275/40ZR17 Goodyear Eagle F1 tires, SS badges, and a unique spoiler. The work included the addition of the WU8 'SS Performance and appearance' package plus the option of a performance exhaust system which would boost power to 320 hp. The SS Camaros received additional modifications by SLP Engineering of Troy, Michigan. The base Z28 engine delivered 315 horsepower while the SS version produced five additional horsepower. There were carpeted floor mats, full carpeting, interior lights, visor-vanity mirrors, day and night inside rearview mirror, a lighted lockable glove box, a tilt-adjustable sport steering wheel, and a front cupholder. All of the seats were finished in cloth which was also used for the door trim inserts and headliner. In the back was a fixed folding rear bench seat.
The front passengers had a center armrest with storage provision, and the driver had a four-way adjustable seat. There was seating for four individuals with bucket seats in the front. There were dual airbags, tinted windows, variable intermittent windshield wipers, and an AM/FM stereo with four speakers, a fixed antenna, clock, and seek-and-scan. The interiors were well-appointed with an oil pressure gauge, tachometer, water temperature indicator, trip odometer, voltmeter, and warning indicators. The RS trim level was no longer offered, leaving just the base, SS and Z28 trim packages. The suspension was comprised of an independent setup with coil springs, shocks, and an anti-roll bar. Standard equipment included the four-wheel disc ABS brakes, 15.5-gallon fuel tank, a 3.23:1 rear axle ratio, a stainless-steel exhaust system, power rack-and-pinion steering, and a PASS-Key II anti-theft system.

The base Camaro used a 3.8-liter V6 backed by a five-speed overdrive manual gearbox and had a base price of $17,150. They had air conditioning, an AM/FM stereo, two power accessory outlets, analog instrumentation, dual airbags, an ignition disable feature, tinted windows, variable intermittent windshield wipers, and full carpeting. They had disc ABS brakes, daytime running lights, a rear wing spoiler, body-color bumpers, monotone body paint, and manual remote control left-hand outside rearview mirror.
